Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 31, Página 4
After
a
while,
Tom
took
Becky's
candle
and
blew
it
out.
This
act
of
saving
meant
so
much!
No
words
were
needed.
Becky
understood,
and
her
hope
faded
again.
She
knew
Tom
had
a
whole
candle
and
a
few
pieces
in
his
pockets—yet
he
had
to
save
them.
Eventually,
fatigue
began
to
take
over;
the
children
tried
to
stay
alert,
as
it
was
dreadful
to
think
of
sitting
down
when
time
was
so
precious.
Moving
in
any
direction
was
at
least
progress
and
might
lead
to
something;
but
sitting
down
would
invite
death
and
make
it
come
faster.
Finally,
Becky’s
weak
legs
couldn’t
carry
her
any
further.
She
sat
down,
and
Tom
sat
with
her.
They
talked
about
home,
their
friends,
the
cozy
beds,
and
especially
the
light.
Becky
cried,
and
Tom
tried
to
comfort
her,
but
his
words
seemed
worn
out
and
almost
sarcastic.
Becky
was
so
tired
that
she
fell
asleep.
Tom
was
relieved.
He
watched
her
tense
face
relax
and
become
peaceful
as
she
dreamed,
a
smile
appearing.
Her
calm
expression
brought
some
peace
to
him
too,
and
his
thoughts
drifted
to
old
memories.
While
he
was
lost
in
thought,
Becky
woke
up
with
a
cheerful
laugh,
but
it
quickly
turned
into
a
groan.
“Oh,
how
could
I
sleep!
I
wish
I
hadn’t
woken
up!
No!
No,
I
don’t,
Tom!
Don’t
look
like
that!
I
won’t
say
it
again.”
“I’m
glad
you
slept,
Becky;
you’ll
feel
better
now,
and
we’ll
find
the
way
out.”
“We
can
try,
Tom;
but
I
saw
such
a
beautiful
place
in
my
dream.
I
think
we’re
going
there.”
“Maybe
not,
maybe
not.
Cheer
up,
Becky,
and
let’s
keep
trying.”
They
got
up
and
wandered
on,
hand
in
hand,
without
hope.
They
tried
to
guess
how
long
they’d
been
in
the
cave,
but
it
felt
like
days
and
weeks.
Yet,
they
knew
it
couldn’t
be
that
long
because
their
candles
weren’t
gone.
Much
later—though
they
didn’t
know
how
long—Tom
said
they
should
listen
for
dripping
water
to
find
a
spring.
They
found
one
soon,
and
Tom
said
it
was
time
to
rest
again.
Both
were
extremely
tired,
but
Becky
thought
she
could
go
a
bit
further.
She
was
surprised
when
Tom
disagreed.
She
didn’t
understand
why.
They
sat
down,
and
Tom
stuck
his
candle
to
the
wall
with
some
clay.
They
were
lost
in
thought
for
a
while.
Then
Becky
spoke:
