Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 31, Página 3
"Oh,
don't
do
that
again,
Tom,
it's
too
scary,"
Becky
said.
"It
is
scary,
but
I
should,
Becky;
they
might
hear
us,"
he
replied,
shouting
again.
The
"might"
was
even
scarier
than
the
ghostly
laughter,
as
it
admitted
a
dying
hope.
The
children
stood
and
listened,
but
nothing
came
of
it.
Tom
turned
back
and
hurried
along
the
path.
Soon,
his
uncertain
manner
revealed
another
terrifying
truth
to
Becky—he
couldn't
find
the
way
back!
"Oh,
Tom,
you
didn't
make
any
marks!"
"Becky,
I
was
so
foolish!
I
never
thought
we
might
need
to
return!
No—I
can't
find
the
way.
It's
all
mixed
up."
"Tom,
Tom,
we're
lost!
We
can
never
get
out
of
this
awful
place!
Oh,
why
did
we
ever
leave
the
others!"
She
collapsed
to
the
ground,
crying
so
wildly
that
Tom
feared
she
might
die
or
lose
her
mind.
He
sat
beside
her
and
held
her;
she
buried
her
face
in
his
chest,
clinging
to
him,
pouring
out
her
fears
and
regrets,
while
the
echoes
turned
them
into
mocking
laughter.
Tom
begged
her
to
have
hope
again,
and
she
said
she
couldn't.
He
began
blaming
himself
for
getting
her
into
this
terrible
situation;
this
had
a
better
effect.
She
said
she
would
try
to
hope
again,
she
would
get
up
and
follow
wherever
he
led
if
only
he
wouldn't
talk
like
that
anymore.
He
was
no
more
to
blame
than
she
was,
she
said.
So
they
moved
on
again—aimlessly—just
wandering.
All
they
could
do
was
keep
moving.
For
a
while,
hope
seemed
to
revive—not
for
any
particular
reason,
but
because
hope
tends
to
come
back
when
it's
not
worn
out
by
age
and
repeated
failures.
