Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 31, Página 9
Then
an
idea
came
to
him.
There
were
some
nearby
side
passages.
It
would
be
better
to
explore
them
than
sit
doing
nothing.
He
took
a
kite-line
from
his
pocket,
tied
it
to
a
projection,
and
he
and
Becky
started
exploring,
Tom
leading
and
unwinding
the
line
as
they
went.
After
twenty
steps,
the
corridor
ended
in
a
“jumping-off
place.”
Tom
got
down
on
his
knees
and
felt
below,
then
as
far
around
the
corner
as
he
could
reach.
He
tried
to
stretch
a
little
further
to
the
right,
and
suddenly,
not
twenty
yards
away,
a
human
hand
holding
a
candle
appeared
from
behind
a
rock!
Tom
shouted
joyfully,
and
immediately
the
hand
was
followed
by
the
body
it
belonged
to—Injun
Joe’s!
Tom
was
paralyzed;
he
couldn’t
move.
He
was
vastly
relieved
the
next
moment
to
see
the
“Spaniard”
run
away
and
disappear.
Tom
wondered
why
Joe
hadn’t
recognized
his
voice
and
come
to
kill
him
for
testifying
in
court.
But
the
echoes
must
have
disguised
his
voice.
That
must
be
it,
he
thought.
Tom’s
fright
weakened
every
muscle
in
his
body.
He
decided
that
if
he
had
enough
strength
to
get
back
to
the
spring,
he
would
stay
there
and
nothing
would
make
him
risk
meeting
Injun
Joe
again.
He
didn’t
tell
Becky
what
he
had
seen.
He
only
said
he
had
shouted
“for
luck.”
In
the
end,
hunger
and
misery
overpower
fear.
After
another
long
wait
at
the
spring
and
a
restless
sleep,
things
changed.
The
children
woke
up
with
intense
hunger.
Tom
thought
it
might
be
Wednesday,
Thursday,
or
even
later,
and
assumed
the
search
had
been
abandoned.
He
suggested
exploring
another
passage.
He
was
ready
to
face
Injun
Joe
and
any
other
dangers.
But
Becky
was
very
weak.
She
had
fallen
into
a
hopeless
state
and
refused
to
be
stirred.
She
said
she
would
stay
where
she
was
and
wait
to
die—it
wouldn’t
take
long.
She
told
Tom
to
explore
with
the
kite-line
if
he
wanted
to,
but
begged
him
to
return
often
to
talk
to
her.
She
made
him
promise
that
when
the
dreadful
moment
arrived,
he
would
stay
with
her
and
hold
her
hand
until
the
end.
Tom
kissed
her,
feeling
a
lump
in
his
throat,
and
pretended
to
be
sure
they
would
find
the
searchers
or
a
way
out
of
the
cave.
Then
he
took
the
kite-line
in
his
hand
and
crawled
down
one
of
the
passages
on
his
hands
and
knees,
tormented
by
hunger
and
filled
with
a
sense
of
impending
disaster.
