Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 31, Página 8
Neither
of
them
knew
how
long
it
was
before
Becky
slowly
realized
she
was
crying
in
Tom’s
arms.
After
what
felt
like
an
eternity,
they
both
woke
from
a
deep
sleep
and
faced
their
misery
again.
Tom
guessed
it
might
be
Sunday
now—maybe
Monday.
He
tried
to
get
Becky
to
talk,
but
her
sadness
was
overwhelming,
and
she
had
lost
all
hope.
Tom
said
they
must
have
been
missed
by
now,
and
surely
a
search
was
happening.
He
would
shout,
and
perhaps
someone
would
hear
them.
He
tried,
but
the
echoes
in
the
dark
sounded
so
terrible
that
he
stopped.
The
hours
dragged
on,
and
hunger
tormented
them
again.
There
was
a
bit
of
Tom’s
half
of
the
cake
left;
they
divided
and
ate
it.
But
they
felt
even
hungrier
than
before.
The
small
amount
of
food
only
increased
their
hunger.
After
a
while,
Tom
said:
“SH!
Did
you
hear
that?”
They
both
held
their
breath
and
listened.
There
was
a
sound
like
a
faint,
distant
shout.
Tom
immediately
responded
and,
holding
Becky’s
hand,
started
moving
down
the
corridor
towards
it.
Soon
he
listened
again;
the
sound
was
there,
and
it
seemed
closer.
“It’s
them!”
said
Tom;
“they’re
coming!
Come
on,
Becky—we’re
saved
now!”
The
children
were
overjoyed.
Their
pace
was
slow,
though,
because
they
had
to
be
careful
of
the
frequent
pitfalls.
Soon
they
reached
one
and
had
to
stop.
It
could
have
been
three
feet
deep
or
a
hundred—there
was
no
way
to
cross
it.
Tom
lay
down
and
reached
as
far
down
as
he
could.
No
bottom.
They
had
to
wait
for
the
searchers
to
come.
They
listened,
but
the
distant
shouts
seemed
to
be
fading
away!
A
moment
later,
they
were
gone
completely.
The
crushing
disappointment!
Tom
shouted
until
he
was
hoarse,
but
it
was
useless.
He
spoke
encouragingly
to
Becky,
but
a
long,
anxious
wait
passed
with
no
more
sounds.
The
children
made
their
way
back
to
the
spring.
The
time
dragged
on;
they
slept
again
and
woke
up
hungry
and
miserable.
Tom
thought
it
must
be
Tuesday
by
now.
