Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 34, Página 3
Some
minutes
later,
the
widow’s
guests
were
at
the
supper
table,
and
a
dozen
children
sat
at
small
side
tables
in
the
same
room,
as
was
the
custom
in
that
place
and
time.
At
the
right
moment,
Mr.
Jones
made
his
speech,
thanking
the
widow
for
honoring
him
and
his
sons,
but
mentioned
there
was
another
person
whose
modesty—
And
so
on.
He
revealed
his
secret
about
Huck’s
role
in
the
adventure
as
dramatically
as
he
could,
but
the
surprise
was
mostly
fake
and
not
as
enthusiastic
as
it
might
have
been
under
better
circumstances.
However,
the
widow
pretended
to
be
quite
astonished
and
showered
Huck
with
so
many
compliments
and
gratitude
that
he
nearly
forgot
the
discomfort
of
his
new
clothes
in
the
unbearable
discomfort
of
being
the
center
of
attention
and
praise.
The
widow
said
she
intended
to
give
Huck
a
home
with
her
and
educate
him;
and
when
she
could
afford
it,
she
would
help
him
start
a
small
business.
Tom’s
moment
had
come.
He
said:
"Huck
doesn’t
need
it.
Huck’s
rich."
Only
the
guests'
good
manners
kept
them
from
laughing
at
this
joke.
But
the
silence
was
awkward.
Tom
broke
it:
"Huck’s
got
money.
You
might
not
believe
it,
but
he
has
plenty.
Oh,
don’t
smile—I
can
prove
it.
Just
wait
a
minute."
Tom
ran
outside.
The
guests
exchanged
puzzled
looks
and
glanced
at
Huck,
who
was
speechless.
"Sid,
what’s
wrong
with
Tom?"
asked
Aunt
Polly.
"He—well,
you
can
never
figure
that
boy
out.
I
never—"
