El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 1, Página 25
“I
forgot
to
ask
you
something.
We
heard
you
were
engaged
to
a
girl
out
West.”
“That’s
right,”
Tom
said.
“We
heard
you
were
engaged.”
“It’s
not
true.
I’m
too
poor.”
“But
we
heard
it,”
said
Daisy.
“We
heard
it
from
three
people,
so
it
must
be
true.”
I
knew
what
they
meant,
but
I
was
not
engaged.
The
gossip
was
one
reason
I
came
East.
You
can’t
stop
seeing
a
friend
because
of
rumors,
but
I
did
not
want
to
be
forced
into
marriage.
Their
interest
touched
me.
It
made
them
seem
less
rich.
But
I
was
confused
and
a
little
upset
as
I
drove
away.
It
seemed
Daisy
should
run
out
of
the
house
with
her
child—but
she
did
not
think
that
way.
As
for
Tom,
the
fact
that
he
“had
some
woman
in
New
York”
was
less
surprising
than
that
he
was
sad
about
a
book.
Something
made
him
think
about
old
ideas
as
if
they
did
not
make
him
happy
anymore.
