El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 1, Página 13
Sometimes
Daisy
and
Miss
Baker
talked
together,
not
really
chatting.
They
were
cool
like
their
white
dresses.
They
accepted
Tom
and
me,
just
trying
to
be
polite.
They
knew
dinner
would
end
soon,
and
the
evening
too.
It
was
different
from
the
West,
where
evenings
moved
quickly
to
the
end.
“You
make
me
feel
uncivilized,
Daisy,”
I
said,
drinking
my
second
glass
of
wine.
“Can’t
you
talk
about
crops
or
something?”
I
didn’t
mean
anything
by
it,
but
it
started
something
unexpected.
“Civilization’s
going
to
pieces,”
Tom
said
loudly.
“I’m
becoming
a
pessimist.
Have
you
read
The
Rise
of
the
Coloured
Empires
by
Goddard?”
“Why,
no,”
I
said,
surprised
by
his
tone.
“It’s
a
fine
book.
Everyone
should
read
it.
It
says
if
we’re
not
careful,
the
white
race
will
be
submerged.
It’s
scientific;
it’s
proven.”
