El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 1, Página 18
“She
shouldn’t
call
him
at
dinner.
Don’t
you
think?”
Before
I
understood,
there
was
the
sound
of
a
dress
and
boots,
and
Tom
and
Daisy
returned
to
the
table.
“It
couldn’t
be
helped!”
Daisy
said
with
forced
cheer.
She
sat
down,
looked
at
Miss
Baker
and
then
at
me.
She
said,
“I
looked
outside
for
a
minute.
It’s
very
romantic
out
there.
There’s
a
bird
on
the
lawn.
I
think
it’s
a
nightingale
from
a
big
ship.
He’s
singing
away.”
Her
voice
sang,
“It’s
romantic,
isn’t
it,
Tom?”
“Very
romantic,”
he
said.
Then
he
said
to
me,
“If
it’s
light
after
dinner,
I
want
to
show
you
the
stables.”
The
telephone
rang
loudly
inside,
and
Daisy
shook
her
head
at
Tom.
The
subject
of
the
stables
disappeared.
I
remember
the
candles
being
lit
again.
I
wanted
to
look
at
everyone,
but
I
also
wanted
to
avoid
their
eyes.
I
couldn’t
guess
what
Daisy
and
Tom
were
thinking.
I
doubt
if
even
Miss
Baker,
who
seemed
very
skeptical,
could
forget
the
phone
call.
Some
people
might
find
the
situation
interesting,
but
I
felt
like
calling
the
police.
