El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 4, Página 1
On
Sunday
morning,
while
church
bells
rang
in
the
villages,
many
people
came
back
to
Gatsby's
house.
They
laughed
and
enjoyed
themselves
on
his
lawn.
"He's
a
bootlegger,"
said
the
young
ladies,
walking
between
his
cocktails
and
flowers.
"Once
he
killed
a
man
who
found
out
he
was
related
to
Von
Hindenburg
and
the
devil.
Pass
me
a
rose,
honey,
and
pour
me
a
last
drop
in
that
crystal
glass."
Once,
I
wrote
down
the
names
of
those
who
came
to
Gatsby’s
house
that
summer
on
an
old
timetable.
It
is
falling
apart
now,
but
I
can
still
read
the
names.
They
show
who
accepted
Gatsby’s
hospitality
without
knowing
much
about
him.
From
East
Egg
came
the
Chester
Beckers,
the
Leeches,
a
man
named
Bunsen
I
knew
at
Yale,
and
Doctor
Webster
Civet,
who
drowned
last
summer
in
Maine.
The
Hornbeams,
the
Willie
Voltaires,
and
the
Blackbuck
family
came
too.
They
always
stayed
in
a
corner
and
turned
up
their
noses
at
others.
The
Ismays,
the
Chrysties,
Edgar
Beaver,
whose
hair
turned
white
for
no
reason,
also
visited.
I
remember
Clarence
Endive
from
East
Egg.
He
came
once
in
white
knickerbockers
and
fought
with
a
bum
named
Etty
in
the
garden.
From
farther
on
the
Island
came
the
Cheadles,
the
O.
R.
P.
Schraeders,
the
Stonewall
Jackson
Abrams
of
Georgia,
the
Fishguards,
and
Ripley
Snell.
Snell
was
there
three
days
before
going
to
jail;
he
was
so
drunk
that
Mrs.
Ulysses
Swett’s
car
ran
over
his
hand.
The
Dancies,
S.
B.
Whitebait,
Maurice
A.
Flink,
the
Hammerheads,
and
Beluga
the
tobacco
importer,
with
his
girls,
also
came.
From
West
Egg
came
the
Poles,
the
Mulreadys,
Cecil
Roebuck,
Cecil
Schoen,
Gulick
the
State
senator,
and
Newton
Orchid,
who
controlled
Films
Par
Excellence.
Eckhaust,
Clyde
Cohen,
Don
S.
Schwartz,
and
Arthur
McCarty
were
connected
with
movies.
The
Catlips,
the
Bembergs,
G.
Earl
Muldoon,
Da
Fontano
the
promoter,
Ed
Legros,
James
B.
(“Rot-Gut”)
Ferret,
the
De
Jongs,
and
Ernest
Lilly
came
to
gamble.
When
Ferret
wandered
into
the
garden,
it
meant
he
lost
all
his
money.
