El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 1, Página 13
Sometimes
she
and
Miss
Baker
talked
at
the
same
time,
in
a
light,
teasing
way
that
was
never
quite
chatter.
It
was
as
cool
as
their
white
dresses
and
their
impersonal
eyes.
They
were
here,
accepting
Tom
and
me,
making
a
polite
effort
to
entertain
or
be
entertained.
They
knew
dinner
would
end
soon,
and
later
the
evening,
which
they
would
put
away
casually.
It
was
different
from
the
West,
where
an
evening
rushed
from
one
phase
to
another,
always
expecting
something
or
fearing
the
moment
itself.
“You
make
me
feel
uncivilized,
Daisy,”
I
admitted
after
my
second
glass
of
corky
but
impressive
claret.
“Can’t
you
talk
about
crops
or
something?”
I
didn’t
mean
anything
by
this,
but
it
was
taken
in
an
unexpected
way.
“Civilization
is
falling
apart,”
Tom
said
suddenly.
“I’ve
become
very
pessimistic.
Have
you
read
The
Rise
of
the
Coloured
Empires
by
Goddard?”
“No,”
I
answered,
surprised
by
his
tone.
“Well,
it’s
a
great
book,
and
everyone
should
read
it.
The
idea
is
if
we’re
not
careful,
the
white
race
will
be
completely
submerged.
It’s
all
scientific;
it’s
been
proven.”
