El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 1, Página 18
“She
should
have
the
decency
not
to
call
during
dinner,
don’t
you
think?”
Before
I
fully
understood,
there
was
a
rustle
of
a
dress
and
the
sound
of
leather
boots.
Tom
and
Daisy
returned
to
the
table.
“It
couldn’t
be
helped!”
Daisy
said
with
forced
cheerfulness.
She
sat
down,
looked
at
Miss
Baker
and
then
at
me,
and
said,
“I
looked
outside
for
a
moment,
and
it’s
very
romantic
out
there.
There’s
a
bird
on
the
lawn
that
I
think
might
be
a
nightingale
that
came
over
on
the
Cunard
or
White
Star
Line.
It’s
singing
away—”
Her
voice
sang,
“Isn’t
it
romantic,
Tom?”
“Very
romantic,”
he
replied,
then
miserably
added
to
me,
“If
it’s
light
enough
after
dinner,
I
want
to
show
you
the
stables.”
The
phone
rang
inside,
startling
us,
and
as
Daisy
shook
her
head
at
Tom,
the
topic
of
the
stables,
and
all
other
topics,
disappeared.
In
the
broken
moments
of
the
last
five
minutes
at
the
table,
I
remember
the
candles
being
lit
again,
pointlessly,
and
I
felt
the
urge
to
look
at
everyone
directly,
yet
avoid
their
eyes.
I
couldn’t
guess
what
Daisy
and
Tom
were
thinking,
but
I
doubted
if
even
Miss
Baker,
who
seemed
to
have
a
certain
skepticism,
could
ignore
the
shrill
urgency
of
this
fifth
guest.
To
some,
the
situation
might
seem
intriguing—my
instinct
was
to
call
the
police
immediately.
