El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 2, Página 1
About
halfway
between
West
Egg
and
New
York,
the
road
quickly
joins
the
railroad
and
runs
beside
it
for
a
short
distance.
It
moves
away
from
a
desolate
area
of
land.
This
is
a
valley
of
ashes,
where
ashes
form
into
ridges
and
hills.
It
looks
like
a
strange
farm
where
ashes
grow
like
wheat.
The
ashes
take
the
shapes
of
houses,
chimneys,
and
smoke.
Finally,
they
form
ash-grey
men,
who
move
slowly
through
the
dusty
air.
Sometimes,
a
line
of
grey
cars
moves
along
an
invisible
track,
makes
a
terrible
noise,
and
stops.
Then
the
ash-grey
men
appear
with
heavy
spades
and
stir
up
a
thick
cloud,
hiding
their
work
from
view.
Above
the
grey
land
and
the
dust,
you
see
the
eyes
of
Doctor
T.
J.
Eckleburg.
These
eyes
are
blue
and
huge,
with
retinas
one
yard
high.
They
look
out
from
a
pair
of
large
yellow
glasses,
without
a
face.
Someone
put
them
there
to
attract
customers
in
Queens,
but
then
the
person
disappeared
or
forgot
them.
The
eyes,
now
a
bit
faded
from
the
weather,
watch
over
the
dumping
ground.
The
valley
of
ashes
is
next
to
a
small
dirty
river.
When
the
drawbridge
goes
up
for
barges,
train
passengers
can
look
at
the
sad
scene
for
up
to
half
an
hour.
There
is
always
a
stop
of
at
least
a
minute,
and
because
of
this,
I
first
met
Tom
Buchanan’s
mistress.
Everyone
knew
Tom
had
a
mistress,
and
they
didn’t
like
it.
His
friends
were
annoyed
when
he
showed
up
in
cafés
with
her
and
then
walked
around
talking
to
others.
I
was
curious
to
see
her
but
didn’t
want
to
meet
her—yet
I
did.
I
went
with
Tom
to
New
York
on
the
train
one
afternoon.
When
we
stopped
by
the
ash-heaps,
he
stood
up
and,
grabbing
my
elbow,
pulled
me
out
of
the
car.
“We’re
getting
off,”
he
said.
“I
want
you
to
meet
my
girl.”
I
think
he
had
drunk
a
lot
at
lunch,
and
he
was
very
determined
to
have
my
company.
He
assumed
I
had
nothing
better
to
do
on
a
Sunday
afternoon.
