El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 4, Página 6
“After
that,
I
lived
like
a
young
prince
in
all
the
capitals
of
Europe—Paris,
Venice,
Rome—collecting
jewels,
mostly
rubies,
hunting
big
game,
painting
a
little,
doing
things
just
for
myself,
and
trying
to
forget
something
very
sad
that
happened
to
me
long
ago.”
With
effort,
I
held
back
my
surprised
laughter.
The
words
were
so
overused
they
made
me
think
of
a
cartoon
character
chasing
a
tiger
through
a
park.
"Then
came
the
war,
old
sport.
It
was
a
relief,
and
I
tried
hard
to
die,
but
I
seemed
to
live
a
charmed
life.
I
became
a
first
lieutenant
when
it
started.
In
the
Argonne
Forest,
I
led
my
machine-gun
group
so
far
ahead
that
there
was
a
half-mile
gap
on
both
sides
where
the
infantry
couldn't
follow.
We
stayed
there
for
two
days
and
nights,
with
a
hundred
thirty
men
and
sixteen
Lewis
guns.
When
the
infantry
arrived,
they
found
the
symbols
of
three
German
divisions
among
the
dead.
I
was
promoted
to
major,
and
every
Allied
government
gave
me
a
medal—even
Montenegro,
little
Montenegro
on
the
Adriatic
Sea!"
Little
Montenegro!
He
said
the
words
with
a
smile.
His
smile
understood
Montenegro's
difficult
history
and
admired
the
courage
of
its
people.
It
appreciated
the
reasons
that
made
Montenegro
give
this
honor
from
its
warm
heart.
My
disbelief
turned
into
fascination;
it
was
like
quickly
flipping
through
many
magazines.
He
reached
into
his
pocket,
and
a
piece
of
metal
on
a
ribbon
fell
into
my
hand.
"That's
the
one
from
Montenegro."
