understood
why
Jordan
Baker
thought
he
was
lying.
He
hurried
over
the
words
“educated
at
Oxford,”
or
swallowed
them,
or
choked
on
them,
as
if
they
had
troubled
him
before.
With
this
doubt,
his
whole
story
fell
apart,
and
I
wondered
if
there
wasn’t
something
a
little
dark
about
him
after
all.
“What
part
of
the
Middle
West?”
I
asked
casually.
“San
Francisco.”
“I
see.”
“My
family
all
died,
and
I
inherited
a
lot
of
money.”
His
voice
was
serious,
as
if
the
memory
of
losing
his
family
still
haunted
him.
For
a
moment,
I
thought
he
was
joking,
but
a
look
at
him
convinced
me
he
wasn’t.
