In
the
city,
I
tried
to
list
the
stock
quotations,
but
then
I
fell
asleep
in
my
chair.
Just
before
noon,
the
phone
woke
me,
and
I
started
up,
sweating.
It
was
Jordan
Baker;
she
often
called
me
at
this
hour
because
her
movements
between
hotels
and
clubs
made
her
hard
to
find
otherwise.
Usually,
her
voice
sounded
fresh
and
cool,
like
a
piece
of
green
golf
course
flying
in
through
the
window,
but
today
it
seemed
harsh
and
dry.
“I’ve
left
Daisy’s
house,”
she
said.
“I’m
at
Hempstead,
and
I’m
going
to
Southampton
this
afternoon.”
It
was
probably
smart
to
leave
Daisy’s
house,
but
it
annoyed
me,
and
her
next
remark
made
me
tense.
“You
weren’t
so
nice
to
me
last
night.”
“How
could
that
matter
then?”
Silence
for
a
moment.
