El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 1, Página 13
Sometimes
she
and
Miss
Baker
spoke
at
once,
with
a
casual,
teasing
inconsequence
that
was
never
quite
chatter,
as
cool
as
their
white
dresses
and
impersonal
eyes,
absent
of
desire.
They
accepted
Tom
and
me,
making
a
polite
effort
to
entertain
or
be
entertained.
They
knew
dinner
and
the
evening
would
soon
end
and
be
put
away.
It
was
different
from
the
West,
where
evenings
raced
from
phase
to
phase,
either
in
anticipation
or
dread
of
the
moment.
"You
make
me
feel
uncivilized,
Daisy,"
I
admitted,
on
my
second
glass
of
corky
but
impressive
claret.
"Can't
you
talk
about
crops
or
something?"
I
meant
nothing
specific,
but
my
remark
took
an
unexpected
turn.
"Civilization's
collapsing,"
Tom
burst
out
violently.
"I've
become
a
terrible
pessimist.
Have
you
read
The
Rise
of
the
Coloured
Empires
by
Goddard?"
"No,"
I
replied,
surprised
by
his
tone.
"Well,
it's
a
great
book,
everyone
should
read
it.
The
idea
is
if
we
don't
watch
out,
the
white
race
will
be
submerged.
It's
all
scientific;
it's
been
proven."
