El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 1, Página 18
"She
should
have
the
decency
not
to
call
during
dinner.
Don't
you
think?"
Almost
before
I
understood
her
meaning,
there
was
the
rustle
of
a
dress
and
the
sound
of
leather
boots,
and
Tom
and
Daisy
returned
to
the
table.
"It
couldn't
be
helped!"
Daisy
cried
with
tense
cheerfulness.
She
sat
down,
looked
closely
at
Miss
Baker,
then
at
me,
and
said,
“I
just
looked
outside,
and
it’s
so
romantic.
There’s
a
bird
on
the
lawn
that
might
be
a
nightingale
from
the
Cunard
or
White
Star
Line.
It’s
singing
away.”
Her
voice
sang,
“Isn’t
it
romantic,
Tom?”
“Very
romantic,”
he
replied,
then
miserably
added
to
me,
“If
it’s
light
enough
after
dinner,
I
want
to
show
you
the
stables.”
The
phone
rang
inside,
startling
us,
and
as
Daisy
shook
her
head
decisively
at
Tom,
the
topic
of
the
stables,
and
indeed
all
topics,
disappeared.
Among
the
fragments
of
the
last
few
minutes
at
the
table,
I
remember
the
candles
being
lit
again,
pointlessly,
and
I
felt
a
desire
to
look
directly
at
everyone,
yet
avoid
all
eyes.
I
couldn’t
guess
what
Daisy
and
Tom
were
thinking,
but
I
doubted
even
Miss
Baker,
who
seemed
to
have
a
strong
skepticism,
could
completely
ignore
the
fifth
guest’s
urgent
call.
To
some,
the
situation
might
have
seemed
intriguing—my
instinct
was
to
call
the
police
immediately.
