El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 1, Página 19
Needless
to
say,
the
horses
weren’t
mentioned
again.
Tom
and
Miss
Baker,
with
some
distance
between
them,
walked
back
into
the
library
as
if
to
keep
watch
over
a
very
real
presence,
while
I,
trying
to
look
both
interested
and
a
little
deaf,
followed
Daisy
around
a
series
of
verandas
to
the
front
porch.
In
its
deep
shadow,
we
sat
side
by
side
on
a
wicker
settee.
Daisy
put
her
face
in
her
hands
as
if
feeling
its
beautiful
shape,
and
her
eyes
gradually
moved
out
into
the
dark
evening.
Seeing
she
was
full
of
turbulent
emotions,
I
asked
soothing
questions
about
her
little
girl.
“We
don’t
really
know
each
other,
Nick,”
she
said
suddenly.
“Even
though
we’re
cousins.
You
didn’t
come
to
my
wedding.”
“I
wasn’t
back
from
the
war.”
“That’s
true.”
She
hesitated.
“Well,
I’ve
had
a
very
rough
time,
Nick,
and
I’m
quite
cynical
about
everything.”
Clearly,
she
had
her
reasons.
I
waited,
but
she
didn’t
say
more,
so
after
a
moment,
I
weakly
returned
to
the
topic
of
her
daughter.
