El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 7, Página 28
There
is
no
confusion
like
that
of
a
simple
mind,
and
as
we
drove
away,
Tom
felt
the
sharp
sting
of
panic.
His
wife
and
his
mistress,
until
an
hour
ago
safe
and
secure,
were
slipping
rapidly
from
his
control.
Instinctively,
he
pressed
the
accelerator,
trying
both
to
catch
up
with
Daisy
and
to
leave
Wilson
behind,
and
we
sped
toward
Astoria
at
fifty
miles
an
hour
until,
among
the
spidery
girders
of
the
elevated
train,
we
saw
the
easygoing
blue
coupé.
“Those
big
cinemas
around
Fiftieth
Street
are
cool,”
suggested
Jordan.
“I
love
New
York
on
summer
afternoons
when
everyone’s
away.
There’s
something
very
sensual
about
it—overripe,
like
all
sorts
of
strange
fruits
might
fall
into
your
hands.”
The
word
“sensual”
further
unsettled
Tom,
but
before
he
could
respond,
the
coupé
stopped,
and
Daisy
signaled
us
to
pull
up
alongside.
“Where
are
we
going?”
she
shouted.
“How
about
the
movies?”
“It’s
so
hot,”
she
complained.
“You
go.
We’ll
drive
around
and
meet
you
after.”
With
some
effort,
her
humor
surfaced
faintly.
“We’ll
meet
you
on
some
corner.
I’ll
be
the
man
smoking
two
cigarettes.”
