"Oh,"
she
said,
"I
understand."
"One
day,
I
went
up
in
a
balloon.
The
ropes
got
twisted,
and
I
could
not
come
down.
It
went
above
the
clouds.
A
wind
took
it
far
away.
I
traveled
in
the
air
for
a
day
and
night.
On
the
second
morning,
I
saw
the
balloon
over
a
new
and
pretty
country.
"It
came
down
slowly,
and
I
was
not
hurt.
I
found
a
strange
people.
They
saw
me
come
from
the
clouds
and
thought
I
was
a
great
Wizard.
I
let
them
think
so
because
they
were
scared
and
promised
to
do
anything
I
wanted.
"To
keep
busy,
I
told
them
to
build
this
City
and
my
Palace.
They
did
it
well.
The
country
was
green
and
pretty,
so
I
called
it
the
Emerald
City.
I
made
everyone
wear
green
glasses,
so
everything
looked
green."
"But
isn’t
everything
here
green?"
asked
Dorothy.
"No,
not
more
than
any
other
city,"
said
Oz.
"With
green
glasses,
everything
looks
green.
The
Emerald
City
was
built
many
years
ago.
I
was
young
then,
and
now
I
am
very
old.
The
people
have
worn
green
glasses
so
long
they
think
it
is
really
green.
It
is
a
beautiful
place
with
jewels
and
good
things.
I
have
been
good
to
the
people,
and
they
like
me.
But
I
stayed
in
my
Palace
and
did
not
see
them.
