The
next
morning,
the
soldier
with
the
green
whiskers
led
the
Lion
to
the
great
Throne
Room
and
told
him
to
enter
the
presence
of
Oz.
The
Lion
walked
through
the
door
and
looked
around.
He
was
surprised
to
see
a
Ball
of
Fire
in
front
of
the
throne.
It
was
so
bright
and
hot
that
he
could
hardly
look
at
it.
He
thought
Oz
was
on
fire
and
burning.
But
when
he
moved
closer,
the
heat
burned
his
whiskers.
He
quickly
moved
back
near
the
door.
Then
a
low,
calm
voice
came
from
the
Ball
of
Fire.
It
said
these
words:
“I
am
Oz,
the
Great
and
Terrible.
Who
are
you,
and
why
do
you
come
here?”
The
Lion
replied,
“I
am
a
Cowardly
Lion.
I
am
afraid
of
everything.
I
came
to
ask
you
for
courage,
so
I
can
truly
be
the
King
of
Beasts,
as
people
say.”
“Why
should
I
give
you
courage?”
asked
Oz.
