"Oh,"
she
said,
"I
know."
"One
day,
I
went
up
in
a
balloon.
The
ropes
got
twisted,
and
I
couldn't
come
down.
It
went
high
above
the
clouds.
A
wind
hit
it
and
carried
it
far
away.
For
a
day
and
a
night,
I
traveled
in
the
air.
On
the
morning
of
the
second
day,
I
woke
up
and
found
the
balloon
over
a
strange
and
beautiful
country.
"It
came
down
slowly,
and
I
was
not
hurt.
But
I
found
myself
with
strange
people.
They
saw
me
come
from
the
clouds
and
thought
I
was
a
great
Wizard.
I
let
them
think
so
because
they
were
afraid
of
me
and
promised
to
do
anything
I
wanted.
"To
amuse
myself
and
keep
them
busy,
I
told
them
to
build
this
City
and
my
Palace.
They
did
it
well
and
happily.
Then
I
thought,
since
the
country
was
so
green
and
beautiful,
I
would
call
it
the
Emerald
City.
To
make
the
name
fit
better,
I
put
green
glasses
on
everyone,
so
everything
they
saw
was
green."
"But
isn't
everything
here
green?"
asked
Dorothy.
"No
more
than
in
any
other
city,"
replied
Oz.
"But
when
you
wear
green
glasses,
everything
looks
green.
The
Emerald
City
was
built
many
years
ago.
I
was
young
when
the
balloon
brought
me
here.
Now,
I
am
very
old.
But
my
people
have
worn
green
glasses
so
long
that
they
think
it
is
really
an
Emerald
City.
It
is
certainly
a
beautiful
place,
full
of
jewels
and
precious
things,
and
everything
needed
to
be
happy.
I
have
been
good
to
the
people,
and
they
like
me.
But
ever
since
this
Palace
was
built,
I
have
stayed
inside
and
would
not
see
any
of
them.
