walked

and
down

street,
looking
closely
at
the
houses.
Finally,
he
returned
to
the
pawnbroker's,
tapped
the
pavement
with
his
stick,
and
knocked
on
the
door.
A
young
man
opened
it
quickly.
"Thank
you,"
said
Holmes,
"I
just
wanted
to
ask
how
to
get
to
the
Strand
from
here."
"Third
right,
fourth
left,"
the
assistant
said
quickly,
closing
the
door.
"Smart
fellow,"
said
Holmes
as
we
walked
away.
"He
is
the
fourth
smartest
man
in
London,
and
he
might
be
the
third.
I
have
known
him
before."
"Clearly,"
I
said,
"Mr.
Wilson’s
assistant
is
important
in
this
Red-headed
League
mystery.
You
asked
for
directions
just
to
see
him."
"Not
him."
"What
