Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 22
The
station-master
hadn't
finished
speaking
before
we
all
hurried
towards
the
fire.
We
reached
a
hilltop
and
saw
a
large
white
building
ahead,
with
fire
coming
out
of
every
window,
while
in
the
garden,
three
fire-engines
tried
to
control
the
flames.
"That's
it!"
cried
Hatherley,
very
excited.
"There's
the
gravel
drive,
and
those
are
the
rose
bushes
where
I
lay.
That
second
window
is
the
one
I
jumped
from."
"Well,"
said
Holmes,
"you
have
had
your
revenge.
Your
oil-lamp,
crushed
in
the
press,
set
fire
to
the
wooden
walls.
They
were
too
busy
chasing
you
to
notice.
Now
watch
for
your
friends
from
last
night,
though
I
fear
they
are
a
hundred
miles
away
by
now."
And
Holmes'
fears
were
right,
for
from
that
day,
no
one
ever
heard
of
the
beautiful
woman,
the
sinister
German,
or
the
gloomy
Englishman.
A
peasant
saw
a
cart
with
several
people
and
some
large
boxes
going
towards
Reading,
but
there
all
traces
vanished,
and
even
Holmes
couldn't
find
any
clue
to
their
whereabouts.
The
firemen
were
puzzled
by
the
strange
things
they
found
inside,
and
more
so
by
a
newly
cut
human
thumb
on
a
window-sill
of
the
second
floor.
By
sunset,
they
finally
put
out
the
flames,
but
not
before
the
roof
fell
in,
leaving
the
place
in
ruins.
Only
some
twisted
metal
and
pipes
remained
of
the
machinery
that
cost
our
friend
so
much.
Large
amounts
of
nickel
and
tin
were
found
in
an
out-house,
but
no
coins,
which
may
explain
the
large
boxes
mentioned
earlier.
How
our
hydraulic
engineer
was
moved
from
the
garden
to
where
he
woke
up
might
have
remained
a
mystery,
but
the
soft
ground
told
a
clear
story.
He
was
carried
by
two
people,
one
with
small
feet
and
the
other
with
large
ones.
It
was
likely
the
silent
Englishman,
less
bold
or
murderous
than
his
companion,
helped
the
woman
carry
the
unconscious
man
away
from
danger.
"Well,"
said
our
engineer
sadly
as
we
sat
to
return
to
London,
"it's
been
quite
an
adventure!
I
lost
my
thumb
and
a
fifty-guinea
fee,
and
what
did
I
gain?"
"Experience,"
said
Holmes,
laughing.
"It
may
be
valuable,
you
know;
just
tell
the
story,
and
you'll
be
known
as
great
company
for
the
rest
of
your
life."
