Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Red-Headed League
Capítulo 2, Página 22
“I
think
tonight
you’ll
play
for
higher
stakes
than
ever
before,”
said
Sherlock
Holmes.
“For
you,
Mr.
Merryweather,
it’s
about
£30,000;
for
you,
Jones,
it’s
the
man
you
want
to
catch.”
“John
Clay,
the
murderer,
thief,
and
forger.
He’s
young,
Mr.
Merryweather,
but
a
top
criminal.
I’d
rather
arrest
him
than
any
other
in
London.
He’s
remarkable,
young
John
Clay.
His
grandfather
was
a
duke,
and
he
went
to
Eton
and
Oxford.
He’s
clever
and
elusive,
always
one
step
ahead.
He
might
commit
a
crime
in
Scotland
one
week
and
fund
an
orphanage
in
Cornwall
the
next.
I’ve
been
after
him
for
years
without
even
seeing
him.”
“I
hope
to
introduce
you
to
him
tonight.
I’ve
had
a
few
encounters
with
Mr.
John
Clay
too,
and
I
agree
he’s
at
the
top
of
his
game.
It’s
past
ten,
so
it’s
time
to
leave.
If
you
two
take
the
first
cab,
Watson
and
I
will
follow
in
the
second.”
Sherlock
Holmes
wasn’t
very
talkative
during
the
long
drive,
humming
tunes
from
the
afternoon.
We
traveled
through
a
maze
of
gas-lit
streets
until
we
reached
Farrington
Street.
“We’re
almost
there,”
my
friend
said.
“Merryweather
is
a
bank
director,
personally
involved.
I
thought
it
wise
to
have
Jones
with
us.
He’s
not
bad,
though
not
very
smart
in
his
job.
But
he’s
brave
and
tenacious.
Here
we
are,
and
they’re
waiting
for
us.”
We
arrived
at
the
same
busy
street
we’d
been
at
in
the
morning.
We
dismissed
the
cabs,
and
following
Mr.
Merryweather,
we
went
down
a
narrow
passage
and
through
a
side
door
he
opened.
Inside
was
a
small
corridor
ending
at
a
heavy
iron
gate.
This
led
down
winding
stone
steps
to
another
strong
gate.
Mr.
Merryweather
lit
a
lantern
and
guided
us
down
a
dark,
earthy
passage,
finally
opening
a
third
door
to
a
large
vault
filled
with
crates
and
boxes.
“You’re
well
protected
from
above,”
Holmes
said,
holding
up
the
lantern
and
looking
around.
“And
from
below,”
said
Mr.
Merryweather,
tapping
the
floor
with
his
stick.
“Why,
it
sounds
hollow!”
he
said,
surprised.
