Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Red-Headed League
Capítulo 2, Página 23
“Please
be
quieter!”
Holmes
said
sternly.
“You’ve
already
risked
our
mission’s
success.
Could
you
please
sit
on
one
of
those
boxes
and
not
interfere?”
Mr.
Merryweather
sat
on
a
crate,
looking
quite
upset,
while
Holmes
knelt
on
the
floor.
With
a
lantern
and
magnifying
glass,
he
closely
examined
the
cracks
between
the
stones.
After
a
few
seconds,
he
stood
up,
satisfied,
and
put
his
glass
away.
“We
have
at
least
an
hour,”
Holmes
said.
“They
can't
do
anything
until
the
pawnbroker
is
asleep.
They'll
work
fast
to
have
more
time
to
escape.
We
are
in
the
cellar
of
a
major
London
bank.
Mr.
Merryweather
is
the
chairman,
and
he
will
tell
you
why
this
cellar
interests
some
bold
criminals
right
now.”
“It’s
our
French
gold,”
whispered
Mr.
Merryweather.
“We’ve
had
warnings
that
someone
might
try
to
steal
it.”
“Your
French
gold?”
“Yes.
A
few
months
ago,
we
borrowed
30,000
napoleons
from
the
Bank
of
France
to
strengthen
our
resources.
It’s
known
that
we
haven’t
unpacked
the
money
yet,
and
it’s
still
in
our
cellar.
The
crate
I’m
sitting
on
contains
2,000
napoleons
packed
between
layers
of
lead
foil.
Our
bullion
reserve
is
much
larger
than
usual
for
a
single
branch,
and
the
directors
are
worried
about
it.”
“And
rightfully
so,”
said
Holmes.
“Now,
we
must
plan.
In
an
hour,
things
will
come
to
a
head.
Mr.
Merryweather,
please
cover
that
lantern.”
“And
sit
in
the
dark?”
