Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 2, Página 1
Saturday
morning
came,
and
the
summer
world
was
bright
and
full
of
life.
Everyone
felt
happy,
and
if
someone
was
young,
they
sang.
Faces
were
cheerful,
and
people
walked
with
energy.
The
locust-trees
had
flowers,
and
their
smell
filled
the
air.
Cardiff
Hill
was
green
and
looked
like
a
peaceful,
dreamy
place.
Tom
came
to
the
sidewalk
with
a
bucket
of
whitewash
and
a
long
brush.
He
looked
at
the
fence,
and
all
his
happiness
went
away.
He
felt
very
sad.
The
fence
was
thirty
yards
long
and
nine
feet
high.
Life
seemed
empty
to
him.
He
sighed,
dipped
his
brush,
and
painted
the
top
plank.
He
did
it
again
and
again,
but
the
fence
still
looked
huge.
He
sat
down,
feeling
discouraged.
Jim
came
out
of
the
gate
with
a
tin
pail,
singing
"Buffalo
Gals."
Bringing
water
from
the
town
pump
was
a
job
Tom
hated,
but
now
it
seemed
better.
He
remembered
there
was
company
at
the
pump.
Boys
and
girls,
white,
mulatto,
and
negro,
were
always
there.
They
talked,
played,
and
sometimes
fought.
The
pump
was
only
150
yards
away,
but
Jim
always
took
a
long
time
to
come
back.
Tom
said:
"Jim,
I'll
get
the
water
if
you
paint
some."
Jim
shook
his
head
and
said:
"Can't,
Tom.
Missis
told
me
to
get
this
water
and
not
stop
to
talk.
She
said
she
thinks
you'll
ask
me
to
paint,
and
she
told
me
to
mind
my
own
business—she'll
take
care
of
the
painting."
"Don't
worry
about
what
she
said,
Jim.
She
always
talks
like
that.
Give
me
the
bucket—I
won't
be
gone
long.
She
won't
know."
"Oh,
I
can't,
Tom.
Missis
would
be
very
angry.
She
really
would."
"She
never
hits
anyone
hard—just
with
her
thimble.
Who
cares
about
that?
She
talks
a
lot,
but
it
doesn't
hurt
unless
she
cries.
Jim,
I'll
give
you
a
marble.
A
white
one!"
