Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 2, Página 1
It
was
Saturday
morning,
and
the
summer
world
was
bright
and
full
of
life.
Everyone
seemed
happy,
and
young
people
were
singing.
Faces
looked
cheerful,
and
people
walked
with
energy.
The
locust
trees
were
blooming,
and
their
sweet
scent
filled
the
air.
Cardiff
Hill,
just
outside
the
village,
was
green
and
inviting,
looking
like
a
dreamy
and
peaceful
place.
Tom
came
to
the
sidewalk
with
a
bucket
of
whitewash
and
a
long
brush.
He
looked
at
the
fence,
and
all
his
happiness
disappeared.
He
felt
very
sad.
The
fence
was
thirty
yards
long
and
nine
feet
high.
Life
seemed
empty
to
him,
and
everything
felt
like
a
burden.
He
sighed,
dipped
his
brush,
and
painted
the
top
plank.
He
did
it
again
and
again
but
saw
how
much
fence
was
left
unpainted.
He
sat
down
on
a
tree-box,
feeling
discouraged.
Jim
came
out
of
the
gate
with
a
tin
pail,
singing
"Buffalo
Gals."
Bringing
water
from
the
town
pump
was
a
job
Tom
hated
before,
but
now
it
seemed
better.
He
remembered
the
pump
was
a
place
where
white,
mulatto,
and
black
boys
and
girls
waited,
rested,
traded
toys,
argued,
and
played.
Jim
always
took
a
long
time
to
return
with
water,
and
Tom
knew
why.
Tom
said:
“Hey,
Jim,
I’ll
get
the
water
if
you
paint
some
of
the
fence.”
Jim
shook
his
head
and
replied:
“Can’t
do
it,
Tom.
Miss
Polly
told
me
to
get
this
water
and
not
to
stop
and
play.
She
said
she
knew
you’d
ask
me
to
paint,
so
she
told
me
to
mind
my
own
business.
She
said
she’d
handle
the
painting.”
“Oh,
don’t
worry
about
what
she
said,
Jim.
She
always
talks
like
that.
Give
me
the
bucket—I’ll
be
back
in
a
minute.
She
won’t
know.”
“I
can’t,
Tom.
Miss
Polly
would
be
really
angry.
She
would
be
very
upset.”
“She
never
really
hurts
anyone.
She
just
taps
them
on
the
head
with
her
thimble.
Who
cares
about
that?
She
talks
a
lot,
but
it
doesn’t
hurt—unless
she
cries.
Jim,
I’ll
give
you
a
marble.
I’ll
give
you
a
white
one!”
