I
told
you,”
were
Huck’s
first
words
when
he
got
inside.
“Please

be
killed,
for
sure—but
the
widow
has
been
nice
to
me
sometimes,
and
I
want
to
tell—I
will
tell
if
you
promise
you’ll
never
say
it
was
me.”
“By
George,
he
has
something
to
say,
or
he
wouldn’t
act
like

exclaimed
the
old
man;
“out
with
it

Three
minutes
later,
the
old
man
and
his
sons,
well
armed,
were
going
up
the
hill,
just
entering
the
sumach
path
on
tiptoe,
weapons
in
hand.
Huck
went
no
further
with
them.
He
hid
behind
a
big
rock
and
listened.
There
was
a
long,
anxious
silence,
and
then
suddenly
there
was
a
burst
of
gunfire
and
a
cry.
Huck
didn’t
wait
for

He
ran
down
the
hill
as
fast
as
he
could.
