El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 2, Página 1
Halfway
between
West
Egg
and
New
York,
the
road
joined
the
railroad.
It
ran
beside
it
for
a
short
time.
Then,
it
moved
away
from
a
sad
place.
This
was
a
valley
of
ashes.
Ashes
looked
like
hills
and
gardens.
Ashes
looked
like
houses
and
chimneys.
Ash-grey
men
moved
slowly
through
the
air.
Sometimes,
grey
cars
stopped
there.
Ash-grey
men
with
spades
came
and
worked.
Above
the
grey
land,
there
were
big
eyes.
They
were
the
eyes
of
Doctor
T.
J.
Eckleburg.
The
eyes
were
blue
and
very
big.
They
had
no
face.
They
were
on
big
yellow
glasses.
Maybe
a
doctor
put
them
there
long
ago.
Now,
the
eyes
watched
the
land.
A
small
river
was
next
to
the
valley
of
ashes.
When
the
bridge
was
up,
trains
stopped.
People
on
the
trains
looked
at
the
sad
place.
This
is
where
I
met
Tom
Buchanan’s
girlfriend.
Everyone
knew
Tom
had
a
girlfriend.
People
did
not
like
it
when
he
went
to
cafés
with
her.
He
left
her
at
a
table
and
talked
to
others.
I
wanted
to
see
her
but
not
meet
her.
One
day,
I
went
to
New
York
with
Tom.
The
train
stopped
by
the
ashes.
Tom
stood
up
and
pulled
me
off
the
train.
“We’re
getting
off,”
he
said.
“I
want
you
to
meet
my
girl.”
Tom
drank
a
lot
at
lunch.
He
wanted
me
to
come
with
him.
He
thought
I
had
nothing
to
do.
