El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 1, Página 3
By
chance,
I
rented
a
house
in
a
strange
place
in
North
America.
It
was
on
a
busy
island
east
of
New
York,
with
two
unusual
land
shapes.
Twenty
miles
from
the
city,
two
huge
land
masses,
shaped
like
eggs,
are
separated
by
a
bay.
They
are
not
perfect
ovals,
like
the
egg
in
the
Columbus
story,
but
their
shape
is
similar.
They
are
interesting
because
they
are
different
in
every
way
except
shape
and
size.
I
lived
at
West
Egg,
the
less
fancy
of
the
two.
My
house
was
at
the
end
of
the
egg,
fifty
yards
from
the
water,
between
two
big
houses
that
rented
for
a
lot
of
money.
The
one
on
my
right
was
huge.
It
looked
like
a
French
hotel
with
a
tower,
a
new
ivy-covered
wall,
a
marble
pool,
and
forty
acres
of
garden.
It
was
Gatsby's
mansion.
I
didn't
know
Mr.
Gatsby
then,
but
it
was
his
house.
My
house
was
small
and
not
very
nice,
but
it
was
cheap.
I
had
a
view
of
the
water,
part
of
my
neighbor's
lawn,
and
was
close
to
millionaires,
all
for
eighty
dollars
a
month.
Across
the
bay,
the
white
houses
of
East
Egg
shone
by
the
water.
My
summer
story
starts
when
I
drove
there
for
dinner
with
Tom
and
Daisy
Buchanan.
Daisy
was
my
second
cousin,
and
I
knew
Tom
from
college.
After
the
war,
I
spent
two
days
with
them
in
Chicago.
Tom
was
strong
and
played
football
at
New
Haven.
He
was
famous
and
very
rich.
Even
in
college,
he
spent
money
freely.
Now,
he
had
left
Chicago
and
moved
East
in
a
big
way.
He
even
brought
polo
ponies
from
Lake
Forest.
It
was
hard
to
believe
someone
my
age
was
so
rich.
I
didn’t
know
why
they
moved
East.
They
had
spent
a
year
in
France
and
then
moved
around.
Daisy
said
on
the
phone
it
was
a
permanent
move,
but
I
didn’t
believe
her.
I
felt
Tom
would
always
look
for
excitement,
like
a
football
game
he
couldn't
play
again.
On
a
warm
evening,
I
drove
to
East
Egg
to
see
my
friends.
Their
house
was
more
fancy
than
I
thought.
It
was
a
big
red-and-white
house
by
the
bay.
The
lawn
was
huge
and
had
sundials
and
gardens.
The
front
had
French
windows,
and
Tom
stood
there
in
riding
clothes.
