El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 2, Página 1
About
halfway
between
West
Egg
and
New
York,
the
road
meets
the
railroad
and
runs
beside
it
for
a
short
distance.
It
moves
away
from
a
lonely
area
of
land.
This
is
a
valley
of
ashes.
It
is
a
strange
place
where
ashes
grow
like
plants.
They
form
hills,
gardens,
and
even
houses
and
chimneys.
The
air
is
full
of
ash-grey
men,
who
move
slowly
and
crumble
in
the
dusty
air.
Sometimes,
a
line
of
grey
cars
moves
along
a
hidden
track,
makes
a
terrible
noise,
and
stops.
Then
the
ash-grey
men
come
with
heavy
shovels
and
make
a
cloud
of
dust
that
hides
what
they
do.
Above
the
grey
land
and
dust,
you
can
see
the
eyes
of
Doctor
T.
J.
Eckleburg.
His
eyes
are
blue
and
very
big.
They
are
one
yard
high
and
look
out
from
huge
yellow
glasses.
These
glasses
do
not
sit
on
a
nose.
Maybe
a
strange
eye
doctor
put
them
there
to
get
more
business
and
then
left
them
behind.
Now
the
eyes
watch
over
the
dumping
ground,
faded
by
sun
and
rain.
The
valley
of
ashes
has
a
small
dirty
river
on
one
side.
When
the
bridge
is
up
for
boats,
people
on
trains
can
see
the
sad
scene
for
a
long
time.
The
trains
always
stop
there
for
at
least
a
minute.
Because
of
this,
I
first
met
Tom
Buchanan’s
mistress.
Everyone
knew
Tom
had
a
mistress.
People
did
not
like
that
he
went
to
popular
cafés
with
her.
He
left
her
at
a
table
and
talked
to
other
people.
I
was
curious
to
see
her,
but
I
did
not
want
to
meet
her.
But
I
did.
One
afternoon,
I
went
to
New
York
with
Tom
on
the
train.
When
we
stopped
by
the
ash
heaps,
he
stood
up
and
grabbed
my
elbow.
He
made
me
leave
the
train
with
him.
“We’re
getting
off,”
he
said.
“I
want
you
to
meet
my
girl.”
I
think
he
drank
a
lot
at
lunch.
He
was
very
determined
to
have
me
with
him,
almost
too
much.
He
thought
I
had
nothing
better
to
do
on
a
Sunday
afternoon.
